Subject: John Randolph Club 2015 Information
Dear John Randolph Club Registrant:
I am very much looking forward to seeing you at the 24th meeting of the John Randolph Club in a little over a week. I hope you are as excited as I am about the program we have put together.
A few practical notes.
William S. Lind, who will be speaking at the Randolph Club, has graciously offered to conduct a walking tour of downtown Cleveland for registrants to the Randolph Club who are interested. He is offering this tour at 10:00 am on Friday, October 23 and again at 1:30 pm on the same day. The tour will be substantially the same, but is offered at different times to accommodate different schedules. The tour will assemble at the Euclid Avenue entrance of the hotel. If you are interested in attending, please email Kelsey Hintzman at khintzman@rockfordinstitute.org
Registration will begin at 5 pm, Friday October 23. You will receive a packet with your name tag, the program, and contact information for the restaurants mentioned below. If you would like to receive a copy of the program or contact information for the restaurants before then, please email Kelsey Hintzman.
There will be heavy hors d’oeuvres served at the opening reception on Friday night, but there will be no formal dinner that night. Fortunately, there is an abundance of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, including XO Prime Steaks, Red the Steakhouse, Urban Farmer, and Hyde Park, all steakhouses, Michael Symon’s Lola Bistro and Hodges’ for American cuisine, Blue Point Grille for seafood, Johnny’s Downtown, Cibreo, and Chinato for Italian cuisine, Cowell & Hubbard for French cuisine and Mallorca for Spanish. These restaurants are all quite popular, so if you are interested in dining at any particular place, you may wish to consider making a reservation. If you have access to a car or wish to take a cab, you may wish to consider three quintessential Cleveland restaurants: Sokolowski’s, which serves Polish food cafeteria style; Sterle’s, which features Slovenian cooking; and Balaton, a Hungarian restaurant. (Reservations are almost a necessity for Balaton.)
There will be a continental breakfast at the hotel on Saturday morning and an afternoon break featuring cookies and other bakery items, but registrants are free for lunch. Lunch establishments within walking distance of the hotel include Al’s Deli, Flannery’s, an Irish pub, Zocalo, a Mexican restaurant, the Hofbrau Haus, Noodlecat, which features Asian food, and the Winking Lizard and the Lincoln Tap House, both of which feature standard American fare and the latter of which is in the Tower City shopping complex. Also in Tower City is Susy’s Soups. Sans Souci, which features a great view of Public Square, is in the Renaissance Hotel, and Corky and Lenny’s, a very popular deli, has a restaurant in the downtown casino. Outside the immediate downtown area are three Cleveland establishments, Slyman’s, famous for its corned beef sandwiches, Heck’s, famous for its hamburgers, and the Great Lakes Brewing Company, which was an early part of the revival of independent breweries in America. (These last three are not within walking distance.)
If you are planning to spend some additional time in Cleveland, you may wish to consider visiting the Cleveland Museum of Art, located in University Circle, a few miles east of downtown. The museum’s regular collection is quite good and the current exhibit is “Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse.” Another attraction in the same general area is Lakeview Cemetery, featuring the imposing Garfield Monument and the lovely Wade Chapel with its stained glass by Tiffany. Downtown hosts Playhouse Square, whose numerous theaters feature matinee performances of “The Crucible” and “The Secret Garden” on Sunday afternoon. For those who are interested, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is within walking distance of the hotel.
I look forward to seeing you next week. If you have any questions before then, feel free to email me at tpiatak@rockfordinstitute.org
Sincerely,
Tom Piatak
